What's the Difference...

...between a "statement of purpose" and a "statement of expectations"? I'm supposed to include both in an application to a summer program but I can't see how these two things are any different from each other. Am I hallucinating or are these not the exact same thing?

  1. They sound the same to me! Maybe the statement of purpose is more general (why this program is right for you and what you would get out of it) and the statement of expectations is more specific (what you plan to accomplish during the program.)

    Good luck!

  2. i think a Statement of Purpose is more grand- why are you an artist- while a Statement of Expectation is more practical- what are you going to work on while at our residency and how will this particular residency nurture this process.

  3. I'm with Liz. It's like in life: our purpose on earth is to pass on our DNA, our expectations involve things like houses and wanting Thai instead of Chinese for dinner. Grand and sweeping vs. the immediate realistic.

  4. Thanks for all your input. I went with your suggestions of grand vs. practical and I feel pretty good about it.

I just finished the application and sent it off early this morning. Yeeey!
